The Lathe Machine And Its Parts
The five different parts of the lathe machine are the headstock; tailstock; cutting tools, like the gouge, skew chisel, round chisel, narrower spear and finishing tools; carriage and spindle.
A lathe machine is a tool used to shape and smooth wood. A lathe craftsman or machinist will use a lathe to customize and create wood products. Cylindrically shaped wood items such as baseball bats, cue sticks, chair and table legs, and other parts of wood furniture are created using a lathe. Lathes are also used to carve wood surfaces and provide design elements. If you work with glass or metal, you can get lathes for those jobs too. If you get to know your lathe and its components, you’ll know how to use it right and spot when it needs maintenance like spindle repair.
The Headstock
The headstock of the lathe machine is used to anchor and hold the upper end of the spindle in place. It’s where the motor which turns the wood around is located Remember that thanks to the fact that the back of the headstock has a number of pulleys and gears, you can easily alter the speed of the spindles’ rotation. A high-tension spring, or chuck, holds the wood piece in position preventing it from falling or moving once the spindle begins to rotate.
Tailstock
There is a tailstock which holds the wood tight and this is part of the machine. The center can rotate along with the wood or can remain fixed in place. The turning mechanism contains the parts that allow it to move.
You will require cutting tools like the gouge, skew chisel, round chisel, narrow spear and also finishing tools
Depending on the woodworking project undertaken, you can attach a variety of cutting tools on the lathe machine. Most people will use the gouge tool when it comes time to clear out extra wood. A skew chisel is utilized to create more intricate carved features. Finer details are made using round chisels and narrower spears. To buff wood, use a finishing tool with a round end to minimize the amount of material that gets cut off.
The Carriage
The carriage holds the cutting tool of the lathe which makes it easy for craftsman to work. There are five parts for the carriage, namely the compound rest, cross-slide, apron, tool test and saddle. These parts are used to work together in order to make the cutting tool to fall in place.
Spindle
There are three different types of lathe spindles. These main configurations are the threaded, cam-lock and tapered. The threaded model is the oldest configuration and is not tapered which makes the chuck rather difficult to attach. There are cam studs at one side of the cam-lock spindles and it falls to the same kind of holes. The studs lock in place when a chuck key is turned. The third configuration, the tapered spindle, narrows at the tip and has a threaded collar with a built-in chuck key.
The invention of the lathe machine has made the creation of wood products easier, faster and less physically demanding for the craftsman. Lathe machines also allow craftsmen to work more accurately.

Consider the saddle fixed point 0 of the map f(x,y)=(x/2,2y-7x^2).?
Consider the saddle fixed point 0 of the map f(x,y)=(x/2,2y-7x^2).
(a) Find the inverse map f^-1.
(b) Show that the set S={(x, 4x^2) : x element of the Real numbers} is invariant under f, that
is, if v is in S, then f(v) and f^-1(v) are in S.
(a) We have u = x/2 and v = 2y - 7x^2
Since x = 2u,
v = 2y - 7(2u)^2 = 2y - 28u^2
==> y = 14u^2 + v/2.
Hence, f^(-1)(u, v) = (2u, 14u^2 + v/2).
(b) f(x, 4x^2) = (x/2, 2 * 4x^2 - 7x^2) = (x/2, x^2) = (x/2, 4(x/2)^2) which is in S,
and f^(-1)(x, 4x^2) = (2x, 14x^2 + 4x^2/2) = (2x, 16x^2) = (2x, 4(2x)^2), which is also in S.
I hope this helps!
