Rockshox pike, rockshox reba, or rockshox revelation?
i ride trails and do a little bit of jumping. do you recommend air or coil. what are your comments on these forks? and i have a standard drop out axle, could i change to 20mm or do i have to get new hubs? any help is appreciated! thanks
It depends on what kind of jumping you're talking about. If it's normal xc/am type jumping then the Pike or Revelation will be fine. The Reba is pure xc, not intended for abuse although it's a good racing fork. I have the Pike 454 dual air and use it for urban abuse....it's doing great. I chose the dual air over the coil models because I make that fork do double duty on dirt trails and smaller dj's, too. Coil is certainly more durable pound-for-pound but they have their drawbacks. Weight and adjustability, mostly. Sounds to me like maybe the Revelation is your best choice....a little lighter, a little less expensive than the Pike. If you get into actual dj's then you're going to want to get a good dj or 4x fork and forget any of these three choices.
There are some hubs out there that will interchange from quick release to thru-axle, but where you are at the moment will require you to buy a new hub if you want to go 20mm. I'd highly recommend that you go thru-axle if you do any sort of high speed cornering or aggressive riding....it really does make a huge different in control on the front end. The selection is a bit limited at the moment, but this year is the introduction of the new 15mm thru-axle, too. It's intended to give the benefit of the 20mm with slightly less weight. Honestly, I'm just sticking with 20mm but now you have options. I think normal quick release skewers are on the way out in the future.
Hope this helps you out some.
