Cost of Wind Turbines
Wind turbines that generate electricity have been in use for about 100 years now, and they’re still evolving. Despite being superior in every conceivable way, they’re now also more affordable than ever. Each basic type of wind turbine, of which there are a few, has its own specific attributes and is suited to certain applications.
Large, commercial wind turbines, which have been around since around 1930, are one category which has developed significantly in recent years. Among these enhancements are high-tech blade design (which is made possible in part by newly available materials), increased efficiency, and improved reliability. In most cases, commercial-use turbines are made from heavier materials, in order to work with higher winds on a more consistent basis.
As the strongest and most consistent winds are usually in remote areas like shorelines, commerical wind turbines usually have to be located in these areas. Being “out of the way” like this makes it expensive to have to service them all the time, so it’s a must that these types of wind turbines are built to last. Commercial turbines are the most costly of all modern turbines, usually starting at about $25,000, and often exceeding $100,000.
Wind turbines for use in a residential environment are essentially smaller versions of those larger, commercial models. Residential areas, because of the prevalence of buildings and other obstacles, often experience frequent shifts in wind patterns, and this was a tricky problem for early residential-use turbines to deal with.
Most early residential-use wind turbines were too heavy to be considered for many locations. It would usually be necessary to have a special support structures in order to use them. All told, the drawbacks and costs were usually too much for many homeowners to really consider.
The most recent class of residential-use turbine to emerge is known as the micro turbine. The main advancement with these units is their ability to generate power from lower winds, which allows them to be used even when they’re not mounted on towers. In some instances, it’s even possible to set up a micro turbine directly on your roof. These compact turbines are turning constantly, and this makes up for the fact that they don’t have the maximum power generating capacity of some of the larger models. Starting at about $600, these micro turbines are also affordable and are well within the area in which the electrical bill savings they provide will quickly justify the investment
The cost of a wind turbine is generally contingent upon factors including size and capacity. By building a wind turbine yourself, you can reduce the cost even more. All it takes are some common tools and the right instructions, and just about anyone can put together a wind turbine, and get the lifelong savings that come with it.
