I'm fifteen, and want to race in my city's bicycle classic (Redlands, CA). I own a road bike and go about ten miles a day, but I want to be ready come summer-how long and how far should I go daily? Or what should my training plan be? (Please no idiotic answers. Someone knowledgeable that actually cycles?)
It's not about the miles initially. It's about the time spent on a bike. After a brief warm up, try to do an hour using the correct cadence of between 70-90 rpm on the pedals. Then a cooling off period.
After you can do 20 miles comfortably, then go for 30, then 40 or more. Got a good bicycle computer? If not, get one. Even a cheap one will do the trick. One with a cadence counter will cost more, but may be worth it for you.
